This course is for candidates with little or no experience in the gas industry.
This course will allow learners to gain all the comprehensive knowledge and experience that is needed to gain entry to the gas industry and embark on their new career as a Gas Safe registered operative.
Gas Safe Register recognises the ACS Initial as the professional qualification needed in order to become registered as a certified and professional gas operative. In order to take this assessment, candidates must have passed the initial training (in the training centre) as their foundation knowledge (step 1) as well as their on-site experience on a placement supported by a Gas Registered mentor, with their experience documented in their portfolio (step 2).
If you have existing experience in the gas or plumbing industry, please call us (on 0844 414 1330) so we can advise you on the best option for you becoming fully qualified. Our five-week Get to Gas course is the first step to success in becoming a gas engineer. Take a look below to see the journey from new entrant to confident gas professional.
We understand that some learners are unable to attend a full-time five-week course due to work or family commitments; in which case, we offer flexibility in the attendance structure of the course. We also offer flexible payment options to suit individual needs. We endeavour to meet our learners’ needs wherever possible so please call us (on 0844 414 1330) to discuss so we can come up with a suitable solution for your individual circumstances.
Get to Gas Course: Steps to Success
By following the 3 steps below, you will be able to gain the qualifications and experience required to be Gas Safe registered.

Step 1
In-House Theory
Learners will embark on the first step of their journey to a new career by attending our five-week full-time Get to Gas (Pathway to Domestic Natural Gas) theory and practical foundation course at our reputable training centre.
Based on the latest IGEM/IG/1 criteria, our Get to Gas course will combine classroom-based theory with practical experience in our purpose-built open plan workshops and mock-house to properly equip a new generation of gas engineers.
Trainers will use a variety of methods to train and assess at every stage to ensure learners feel confident in specific modules before they move on to the next stage. Our class sizes stay small in order for learners to receive personalised one-to-one training to give learners the best possible opportunity to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible.
Successful completion of this in-house foundation course will cover the off-the-job criteria required on all gas foundation courses in order to prepare learners for their next step to success – compiling their 40-job portfolio.
This course will cover:
• CCN1/CPA1 – Core Domestic Natural Gas and Combustion Analysis.
• CENWAT – Central Heating Boilers and Water Heaters.
• CKR1 – Domestic Cookers.
• HTR1 – Gas Fires and Wall Heaters.

Step 2
Portfolio Building
Now learners possess all the training and knowledge they need – it’s time to apply that to real-life scenarios! Learners are then required to produce a portfolio of evidence to support the coursework undertaken. Portfolios will be produced on placement under the supervision of a Registered Gas Safe Operative (self-employed engineer or company) for a minimum 40 jobs covering the installation, service and repairs of gas boilers, gas fires and gas cookers for a minimum of 6 months.
Get Training will support and assist every learner with the creation of their portfolio and will be available to review progress regularly.
If the engineer leaners’ have been assigned to is unable to cover certain gas appliances due to their work scope, Get Training will be able assist in finding another suitable gas operative to help build this part of your portfolio. (Some charges may incur).
Once learners complete their five-week training and portfolio, they will receive their pathway certificate – the pre-requisite needed to enrol onto the ACS Initial Assessment and the final step to becoming Gas Safe Registered upon successful completion.
Portfolio building options:
• Secure a placement independently with a Gas Safe registered engineer.
or –
• Get Training will assist you with an engineer for your placement at an additional cost.

Step 3
ACS Initial Assessment
The ACS CCN1 Initial assessment is a series of written and practical assessment undertaken by our centres over a five day period. See more information about it on the course page here.
In order for learners to gain valuable experience and understanding of what is required to become a Registered Gas Safe engineer learners must have on-the-job experience in the industry following their Get to Gas foundation course, before they are able to undertake their ACS Initial assessment.
It is illegal for anyone to be working on gas without being registered or under the supervision of a Gas Safe Registered operative (providing learners have a pathway certificate or equivalent).
ACS Initial Assessment entails:
• CCN1/CPA1 – Core Domestic Natural Gas and Combustion Analysis.
• CENWAT – Central Heating Boilers and Water Heaters.
• CKR1 – Domestic Cookers.
• HTR1 – Gas Fires and Wall Heaters.
See more information on the dedicated course page here.
What happens after you pass?
Having successfully passed the ACS Initial Assessment, your assessment will be sent for certification then our certification body, Blueflame, will upload learners’ details onto the Gas Safe Register. Leaners will receive their final certificate qualifying them, then it is the individual’s responsibility to either;
1. Register to the Gas Safe Register as a sole trader at a cost;
2. Or if employed, it is the employer’s responsibility to register their Gas Safe Registered employees.
