What is LPG?

LPG is a combination of propane and butane gases, usually produced by refining crude oil or natural gas. LPG is used as a fuel for heating, cooking, and sometimes even for powering vehicles. In the electric industry, the 18th Edition is the term that is used when referring to the latest British Standards BS 7671:2028. You might also hear it called; IET wiring regs, the regs, BS7671.

The 18th Edition itself is a book/manual containing the guidelines and processes that all electricians should adhere to, to comply with the legal requirements of the Electricity at Work regulations.

The qualification ensures you are up to date with everything in the 18th Edition, including the latest industry regulations and amendments.

How difficult is the 18th edition exam?

The 18th Edition is not the easiest book to read because of the way the information is structured and written. Because of this, the exam can be difficult to pass if you have not properly prepared.

How can I prepare for the IET Edition wiring regulations course?

First of all, you should have some experience of electrical installations. Reading the book several times is also important. You don’t need to focus on every single word but you need to be familiar with the topics in the book, to be able to quickly locate the information you need during the exam.

Practising mock exams will also help you. There is an IET wiring regs app that you can download onto your phone. This will break down the exam into sections so you can practise one section at a time. It also includes mock tests.

Top tip: The question style in the exam can be a bit difficult to understand. You need to take the time to ‘decode’ what the question is asking you, so you can find the right information to answer.

How much does it cost for the 18th edition?

The course price will vary from provider to provider. At Get Training we charge £695 for the course which lasts 3 days. Our students complete an intensive, 3-day course involving classroom-based learning with no practical element.

No. You already need to have experience with electrical work to be able to complete the course. You should have completed something like a college course or an apprenticeship already.

The 18th edition IET wiring regulations course is designed for people who already have an understanding of the electrotechnical industry. Tradespeople need to meet a certain standard, and that is the standard set out in the 18th edition course.

If you want to join a recognised Competent Person Scheme or apply for an ECS card, you will need an 18th edition certification. Most companies will also require you to have this before you can secure work with them.
